Modern Day Slavery

Description

Slavery is still prevalent across the UK. While the definition has changed, the concept remains, and in 2016, it was reported that there were 136,000 people living in modern slavery in the UK.

Key Activity

Many people are unaware of how rampant slavery still is in the modern world. It is often an issue we assume happens more in developing countries, but it is still a serious problem right here in the UK. We want to help NTE businesses to be able to identify when a person might be living in modern slavery. Here are some key warning signs:

– Someone who appears to be under the control of someone else and is reluctant to speak to others
– Someone who has a distinct lack of personal belongings, wears the same clothes to work every day, or comes to work dressed inappropriately
– Appearing withdrawn or frightened
– Showing signs of physical or psychological abuse
– Someone who resides in their employer’s accommodation
– Someone who is dropped off or picked up from work at unusual times

With the help of our partners, we will be encouraging local NTE businesses to report any suspected perpetrators of modern day slavery.
